2001 Race 1 - Encino Velodrome

This years series started off "Full Speed" on the Encino Velodrome in Southern California. Over 60 racers showed to kick off the series. Some familiar faces from past years of Oval Racing were seen around the track, some dug their stuff out of the back of their closet, dusted it off and hit the track and a few others just came by to check out the action.   All in all the excitement of a New Racing Season was in the air.

The Sportsman Stock class was pretty much Marvin Avila's all day. Avila's car set the TQ pace running a 19/4:05.29 just edging out Robert Pochmara's time of a 19/4:05.46. Avila went on to take the "A" main beating Mike Truhe and Keith Brown. Roy Nesvold found himself in the 4th spot with Jerry Osborn rounding out the Top 5.

In the Sportsman Modified class it was Ron Scott with a 2 second edge over Donn Natale in qualifying. Scott turned in a 22/4:00.54 to Natale's 22/4:02.83.   In the main it was all Natale though who made it to the point and never looked back.   Wayne Evans tried to chase him down, but came up short finishing in the number 2 spot. Felipe Avila, Ron Scott and Andrew Covington made up the front 5.

19t Spec Mod, NORRCA's newest class saw some great action from both "Expert Stock" racers as well as some of the "Expert Mod" drivers. Long time front running "Ex Stock" driver LARRY RUBY took the TQ spot with his run of 22/4:01.57 over last years series champion in both the "Ex Stock and Ex Mod" classes Nic Case. Case's run was a 22/4:04.84.   When the tone sounded in the "A" Main it was Case who jumped out front holding off Ruby for the win. Steve Jacquez moved into the 3rd spot with Brian Bond and Frank Killam taking 4th and 5th.

The 36d Expert Stock class had Dave Werner sitting on the pole with a run of 20/4:02.49 giving him the advantage over Roland Chavarry who qualified with 2nd running 20/4:03.71.   Larry Ruby made his way to the front of the main being hotly pursued by "Uncle Buck" Van Patten and Bob Sarnelle.   Ruby went on the win by nearly 2 seconds. Van Patten and Sarnelle were 2nd and 3rd. TQ Dave Werner finished 4th and Ricky Gray moved up to the 5th spot.

The LIGHTNING FAST Expert Modified class had Kyle Mohan setting the TQ Pace running a 24/4:01.12 edging Roger Pane's 24/4:02.87.   In the main it was Nic Case who led most of the early laps, but Roger Pane making his way through traffic and on a mission chased down Case, as Pane pulled up on the rear bumper of Case's ride it appeared the AIR was disturbed and Case spun toward the infield. Pane blew right by never looking back. Right there to take advantage of Case's mishap was Gary Hamilton who moved into 2nd while case fell back to the 3rd spot. Finishing in 4th was TQ Mohan and Brian Boudakian was 5th.

In NITRO it was all Patrick Evans, Evans seemed to have the only NITRO car that wanted to go in circles this weekend as the other competitors were having handling problems.

The next exciting race in this years series will be held at Showtime R/C Speedway in Bakersfield CA, with race three (The series FIRST Road Course) set to take place at Camarillo's FREEDOM PARK RACEWAY the 21st of April.
