Race #10 Freedom Park Raceway
November 3, 2001[Camarillo, CA] The final event of the first South-West Tour "Championship R/C Racing Series" was set at Camarillo's long time facility.
The Sportsman Stock class championship was wrapped up before this event with Sam Chaloupka taking the Championship. Scott McCaa was the driver who would be the force today though. McCaa set TQ and beat the new champion Chaloupka who would have to settle for 2nd spot today. In a very close finish Mike Plant would come home 3rd and Keith Brown 4th. Joe Hawkins edged out Steve Jacquez for the 5th spot.
In Sportsman Modified Eric Brust outshined the field taking both TQ and the main win. Brust, back after several years out of the hobby is a tough competitor and beat the hard charging Ed Turney who wound up 2nd. Scott McCaa took third while last years Oval Series Champion Tom Kendall came in 4th. 5th spot went to T.J. Kendall and this years Sportsman Modified Champion Donn Natale finished 6th.
19t Spec Mod has been the BIG class of the event all year. This weekend the numbers were not quite as high as they had been at other events but the competition was great all the same. Larry Ruby came into the event trailing point leader Nic Case by a mere 2 points. However, when the series Throw-Out events came into play the only way Ruby could possibly make a bid for the championship was to take both TQ and the A - Main WIN. In qualifying Ruby battled the field trying so hard to get the top spot and the bonus points. Finally in the 3rd round Ruby cleared the field and ran a great run putting him on the pole for the main. When the horn sounded in the main Ruby driving like a racer possessed was on a mission. Ruby got out front and looked like he may be on his way when he came into contact with another car. The field got by and Ruby got way back. Ricky Gray found his way to the front and made a great race out of it. Ruby was able to battle his way around a few cars but when the race was over it was Gray who held off the charge from 2001's NEW 19t Spec Mod Champion NIC CASE. Ruby made his way up to 3rd locking in his 2nd place position in the series. James Albera and Buck Van Patten finished 4th and 5th.
Expert Modified had pulled in a few suprise faces with Brian Boudakian and Gary Hamilton making the trip to Camarillo. Hamilton who only ran a limited schedule of "Tour" races this year proved he is probably the toughest Modified Driver to beat out west. Gary took the TQ spot at all but one of his appearences this year, including this event. In the main it was Hamilton beating Boudakian who finished 2nd and Nic Case the Modified SERIES CHAMPIONI. Ken Collins and Jason Ertrachter wound up 4th and 5th.
NITRO OVAL class champion Ed Turney didn't even have to show up for this event but he came out and played in the Sportsman Mod class.
I want to thank all the racers who made 2001 a GREAT year of racing, can't wait to kick of 2002 in February....
