[Compton CA] by Joe Myers - The SWTour "Championship Series" event at the Crystal Park Casino Raceway saw over 50 of Southern California's best oval racers put to the test of finding speed on a never before run Oval track.

Crystal Park Raceway is better known for 1/8th and 1/5th scale Road Racing, but after Friday Nights Road Race the track was transformed into a 260 ft. high bite oval track. The track was finished around 2 a.m. needing only to be cleaned up a bit before race time.

The OVAL racers started showing up before 6 am Saturday morning, after a drivers meeting just before 10 am the first heat took to the track. For a change the racing actually kicked off on time. The day however was not with out incident. Twice the Scoring Computer failed and after the second time it was replaced with the back up.

The racing action was ho all day, all the classes were very tight for the TQ spot.

In Sportsman Stock Sam Chaloupka held on to the top spot all day, bettering his run each time he ran. Keith Brown qualified Second with Craig Johnson 3rd. Chaloupka went on to win his second TOUR win in a row (also winning last months event on the Camarillo Road Course).

Sportsman Modified saw a great battle for TQ all day from Tom Kendall, Kevin Kilber and Donn Natale. The three of those drivers were seperated by less than .5 seconds for most of qualifying, but it was Kilber who ended up with the TQ points today. Donn Natale was the big winner when it came main time though. For Natale it was his 3rd win out of the 4 races in this years series.

The 19t Spec class with 18 entries was again the biggest class and by far not lacking for great competition.

3 drivers made the 41 one club in qualifying. Nic Case with the TQ points, Paul Cathey and Ricky Gray were the class of the field. The entire "A" main was made up of racers with at least 40 laps so a good show was in order. Paul Cathey was the driver who made it out front and held on to win this event.

In EXPERT MODIFIED it was a suprise visit from Team Associated's Sean Cochran and Daryl Silva who had the field out powered this weekend. Only Eric Steenhoven looked to have anything for these guys with these 3 running 45 laps in qualifying where most of the rest of the field could only muster 43. Tony Gammel running almost in a class of his own qualified 4th turning the only 44 lap run.

The main was a great battle early with Steenhoven out front in the early goings, but he proved to be no match for the "FACTORY" power of Team Associated. Sean Cochran got by and took the win.

1/12th scale saw Donn Natale doing double duty to beat out TQ Lou Maldonado.

Ed Turney took the TQ spot in the NITRO Oval class, but TIM PRICE was able to get his first win of the series.

Next Months race will be the 1/2 way point in the series and will be at Bakersfields SHOWTIME R/C SPEEDWAY. So mark your calendar for JUNE 9th, come on out and have some fun.

Also later in June, the NORRCA Paved Oval State Championships at SHOWTIME R/C SPEEDWAY.
