2002 Race 1 - Crystal Park Raceway
Saturday Feb. 23rd[Compton CA] - The 2002 TOUR kicked off the season on a bright sunny day at Compton's Crystal Park Raceway. A makeshift oval was set up on the facilities normal road course and some 50+ racers made it out to race.
Turns one and two were fairly square with a brutal inside wall while turn 3 had a bit of an obsticle from one of the road course boards. The straight aways were wide and there was plenty of room for some exciting racing. Traction is great at this track due to the 1/8th scale gas cars really giving the asphalt a workout.
The Sportsman Stock class saw Keith Brown win his first ever series race. Brown who was able to hold off the challenge from Andrew Acosta and Joe Hawkins to take the win. Polesitter Buck VanPatten suffered some bad luck and fell back to 8th place.
In the Sportsman Modified class 13 drivers tried to make the 10 car main, including David Campbell who hasn't been seen around the Oval Racing world in a couple years. Other suprise entrants were Troy Schossow who made the trip from Las Vegas and Theo Captanis along with John Hobson.
Ed Turney was fast qualifier running a time that would have put him 8th in the Expert Mod main. Second fast qualifier was Donn Natale, last years class champion. In the main it was Turney coming on strong, but hot on his heels was a charge by Theo and Troy. Turney took the win in a close finish with just over 1 second seperating the front 3 cars.
19t Spec Mod, had a field of 15 cars shooting for a place in the main. Taking the pole in a very tight field was last years champion Nic Case. Case ran a 33/4:02.33 to second qualifier Paul Cathey who turned in 33/4:03.64
Cathey, Larry Ruby and Arnold Brittain all suffered early problems in the main, meanwhile up front was a battle between Case, Josh Smith and Frank Killam. Case held on to take his first win of the season with Smith, Killam and Buck VanPatten all finishing tightly behind him. Ricky Gray rounded out the top 5.
The Expert Modified class saw a good battle between Erik Steenhoven, Brian Boudakian, John (Dr. J.) Ligons and Jason Ertractor. Steenhoven, the ONLY car to run 36 laps in qualifying sat on the pole. Just like in qualifying, the main would belong to Steenhoven. Putting 2 laps on second place Ligons, Erik's 36/4:02.38 would be his fastest run of the day. Ligons held off Jason Ertractor and Boudakian. Eric Larson finished in the 5th spot.
