2002 Race 10 - Showtime R/C Speedway
[Bakersfield CA] by Joe Myers - The "Tour" came into Showtime looking to settle the championship in the two remaining classes.
Along with the championship battle going on, several drivers from Northern Cal. made the trip to check out the exciting series action and Showtime's "NEW" surface.
Ed Turney and Erik Steenhoven had already locked up the titles in the Sportsman Mod and Expert Mod classes, but still left on the table was Sportsman Stock with Lou Maldonado having a mathematical chance of catching point leader Steven Jacquez. The Real battle however is the battle for 19t Spec. between Paul Cathey and Larry Ruby who come into the season finale in a dead tie.
First, in sportsman stock, Lou had to hope for enough entries for a stacked "B" main, then he needed Jacquez to be in it and finish worse than 3rd. When not enough entries showed to field a "B" main the assured Steven the championship. Steve didn't leet this slow down his drive for victory as he not only won the championship, but he also took the "A" Main win. Jeff Kramarsic would finish second with Jason Wood in the 3rd spot.
Sportsman Mod - Although the championship was already settled, there were several drivers gunning for champion Ed Turney on his home turf. In the main event it would be Troy Schossow edging Turney for the victory, Kevin Kilber gave his best effort falling just short finishing 3rd.
19t. Spec - This as always had to be the most exciting class to watch all day. With 18 entries, several of which were not in the points battle but looking to just WIN and spoil the series outcome. Larry Ruby battled for the bonus TQ points with Nic Case, Dave Barber, Kevin Osmond, Ken Collins and others.
When the day was over it was Ken (KC-Racing) Collins who took the "A" main (His first of the series), Collins, Kevin Osmond and Larry Ruby who finished 1-2-3 battled the entire race. Ruby gave everything he had at the finish line trying to make it to second spot, but Osmond was able to hold off the challenge. Cathey who was tied for 1st place in points finished back in the 7th spot thus handing Larry Ruby the 19t. Spec. championship.
Expert Mod - The fast guys main got underway and was ugly from turn one. Ken Collins got out clean, while it seemed everyone else wanted to play bumper tag. Collins made the run unaffected by the carnidge around him and took his second victory of the day. Kevin Osmond and Brian Boudakian wound up 2nd and 3rd.
The Rookie/Novice class had it's largest turnout of the year. Congrats to Eric Rohde on his win, Travis Schossow finished 2nd with Heather Kilber taking 3rd.
The days event went great and I for one can't wait to get started on the "2003 South-West Tour" season.
