2002 Race 2 - Encino Velodrome, Encino CA
(Race results corrected and modified 5-6-02)
[Encino, CA] - Race 2 of this years series was held on the high banked velodrome in California's San Fernando Valley. The Encino Velodrome has played host to many large and fast races, this weekends event was not large but there was plenty of speed.
The years have not been kind to this velodrome and the track is getting quite bumpy. The reconstruction plans have be rescheduled to beging later this year. The bicycle club is hoping to get their entire race year in first, so we'll be back once more before the new wood surface is laid down.
Sportsman Stock is missing several racers so far this year, but that is not stopping the ones who are showing up from having some good racing. Steve Jacquez was by far the quickest car in the field today running nearly .3 seconds a lap quicker then the competition.
The Sportsman Modified class continues to grow this season and the competition has increased along with it. Todays main winner was Tom Kendall beating Kevin Kilber by about 1/2 a lap.
Roland Chavarry took the 19t Spec Mod class "A" main making this his second Velodrome feature win this year. Roland who earlier this year won the West-Coast Superspeedway Shootout was able to capitalize on the bad luck of Larry Ruby and Nic Case avoiding another car.
In Expert Modified Kyle Mohan got an early jump over Roger Pane and Nic Case, Pane had problems off the line and fell to the rear of the field while Mohan checked out. Mid way inito the race Mohan's car got loose and the hard charging Pane having worked his way around traffic closed the gap. Pane made a move coming off the 4th turn and he and Kyle were door to door all the way down the front stretch when both cars touched and headed straight toward the infield. The front two both were out of control heading right at corner marshall Uncle Buck who attempted to get out of harms way, however he wasn't quick enough and quickly found himself on the grass as the speeding cars took his feet right out from under him. This gave the front spot to Case who went on to take the win.

Although this racer has always wanted to race at one of the West Coast Velodromes, money and the fact he is in a wheel chair have prohibited that. Richard decided to run the body that came with the car and I was happy to shoot a photo of him with the car and the track in the back ground.
