2002 Race 4 - Showtime R/C Speedway
[Bakersfield, CA]by Joe Myers - With the NORRCA Paved Oval Nat's scheduled just two weeks after this series race, the competition was great and the drivers were looking for the perfect "Nationals" set up.
Sportsman Stock saw a new face dominate the high banks this weekend. Jimmy Johnson ran fast time and beat the field in the "A" main turning in some great times. Dan Lauderdale and Jason Wood battled for 2nd place with Lauderdale taking the spot. Steve Jacquez and Lou Maldonado rounded out the top 5.
Ed Turney pretty much owns the Sportsman Modified class at SHOWTIME SPEEDWAY . Turney's dominating fashion would not be broken today either. Ed TQ'd and won the main by 3 laps over 2nd place Ron Scott.
19t Spec Mod class again is the "Most Competitive", but this week the TQ and win goes out to Larry Ruby. With final round qualifying really picking up the pace, several drivers were looking for a perfect run just to get into the main. In the run just before Ruby took to the track, Buck VanPatten moved into the front spot with one of his best ever runs at Showtime. Buck's time just fell short of TQ Finishing 2nd to Ruby in the main was Paul Cathey in another near photo finish between these two drivers.
The "Fastest of the Fast" drivers usually put on some great racing at Showtime. Gary, Brian, Leo, Erik and the rest of the Expert Modified class are always looking to out do each other. This weekends competition was good, but lap times were a little slow and no new records would be set today.
Gary Hamilton would go on to win the main with Brian Boudakian right behind.
