2002 Race 5 - HotRod Hobbies

[Saugus, CA]by Joe Myers - The series made it's first ever stop at Hot Rod Hobbies in Saugus this weekend. The track at Hot Rod's is flat, fresh asphalt that measured just over 220'. Several of the countries best oval racers happened to be on hand for this event adding a little excitement to the Modified class.

Sportsman Stock had some new faces again. Taking the main win was Brett Patti with Robert Jelsvik hot on his tail. Joe Hawkins finished 3rd with Lou Maldonado and Mike Plant coming in 4th and 5th.

This week Kevin Kilber was the driver w/ the luck in the Sportsman Modified class. Kilber was lucky enough to out maneuver the rest of the field to just beat Ed Turney across the stripe. Only a few feet back from the front two was Donn Natale finishing 3rd. Keoni Ahyat and Steve Jacquez rounded out the top 5.

With 19t Spec Mod pulling 19 entries, several series regulars would find themselves struggling to make the "A" Main. One of those drivers was Larry Ruby, who ran an identical time to 10th qualifier Roland Chavarry but found himself sitting in the "B" Main.

Setting the pace for the class by far was Mike Dyer. Dyer's car was almost in a class of it's own outpacing the field by 2 laps in qualifying. Dyer took the main almost effortlessly. Eric Greco finished 2nd followed by Buck VanPatten, Dave Barber and Ken Collins.

Jim Silvay looked like he was going to be the man to beat in Expert Modified... just one problem...nobody told Team Associated drivers Daryl Silva and Sean Cochran this. Silva pulled out to an early lead in the "A" main taking the lead on lap two from Eric Steenhoven who pulled the hole shot, but Silva's luck ran out with less than 30 seconds to go and by then Cochran who had made his way into the 2nd spot took over the lead. Silvay made his way to 2nd while Bakersfield's Andrew Kisbey made his way to 3rd. Silva ended up 4th with veteran Gary Hamilton finishing 5th.
