2002 Race 9 - Encino Velodrome[Encino CA] - The "Tour" is winding down as the drivers ran the Encino Velodrome this past weekend. Although the turnout was down, which was expected with the schedule change and conflicts, the racing was great.
One of the most exciting races of the day was of course with the 19t class. Arnold Brittain hopped out to the early lead with Larry Ruby hot on his tail, with Roland Chavarry just a couple feet behind these guys were on fire. Several times Ruby would close the gap going into turn one using the draft and riding less than ONE inch off the rear bumper of Brittain's car. After several laps of this intense action Brittain's car bobbles a little and Ruby shoots to the outside and pulls away slightly. Now it's Arnolds turn to follow, and something happens to Roland's car a he fades away and pulls off the track. Ruby, who came into the event 4 points behind point leader Paul Cathey did what he needed to do to catch up in the points race. Ruby earned the two bonus points for TQ and won the main with Cathey finishing in the 3rd spot.
Sportsman Stock had SUMMER SIZZLER champion Brian Bond setting the qualifying pace, but when the main came it was point leader Steven Jacquez who picked up another 2002 win. This win pretty much clinches the championship for this class.
In the Sportsman Modified class things were exciting as a few drivers found themselves having handling problems. Cars appeared to be all over the track the entire main but at the end it was Donn Natale who survived the carnige and brought home the win. Athough not in attendance, Ed Turney locked up the points championship this week over Kevin Kilber who gave his best effort all series long.
Expert Modified's Erik Steenhoven had pretty much clinched the championship at the last race, however Erik striving for a PERFECT Score hasn't given up the battle yet. Bill McAneney took the top TQ spot after some very exciting qualifying Steenhoven would not be denied in the main as he showed the way to another win.
