[Saugus CA] - The 2003 TOUR kicked off the season on a chilly February morning. There was a slight threat of rain in the air, the track surface was cool, but the racing was HOT!~

66 entries made up the season opener at Rod's little oval track, being this race was held on a Sunday this was a great turnout. Rod runs a local club series the first Sunday of each month which probably helped draw several locals to the event.

Rookie racers are out in force this season, with a few youngsters, a few women making up most of the group.

Stock racers have only had one class to choose from the past couple years, but this weekend almost 30 stock entries helped split stock into both a SPORTSMAN and EXPERT class.

In the Sportsman Modified class the regular racers found a couple new faces this year. Lou Maldonado (long time stock racer) moved up to join force, Bill McAneney long time Modified driver actually stepped down and there were a couple new faces in the mix as well.

19t Spec Mod class is once again going to be the Premier class. All of last years HotDogs are back. Champion Larry Ruby will be defending his title against some stiff competition this year. Paul Cathey has a new car for this year, Nic Case (2001 Champion) was on hand for the first race and last years EXPERT MODIFIED champion Erik Steenhoven has announced he'll be running 19t as well.

The Expert Modified took a pretty big hit this weekend. Only 3 entries made up this normally exciting class. Old favorites like Gary Hamilton, Sean Cochran, The SILVA'S, and some of the other MOD guys were unable to make the SUNDAY event. However, Erik Steenhoven and Brian Boudakain raced each other hard all day with Steenhoven nearly pulling off a 51 lap run.
