2003 Race 2 - Showtime R/C Speedway
Saturday, March 22, 2003[Bakersfield CA] - After a one week delay due to rain, the "TOUR" made it's first of three trips to Bakersfield's SHOWTIME R/C SPEEDWAY where this week saw beautiful sunny skies.
A record 69 entries filled the classes for this exciting stop, including several racers trying the 19t class for the first time. With some of the best drivers in the state, like Erik Steenhoven and Gary Hamilton doing what NASCAR calls "Buschwacking", which is the more expert drivers dropping down a class to step up the competition level in that class. Well that's exactly what Both Gary and Erik accomplished this weekend. The duo brought their KISBEY Modified expertise into the 19t class with the new ARCOR handwound motor and raised the bar by nearly 3 laps.
Rookie racers were on hand again with Bryan, Maria and Kristen banging on each other as they learn how to get around the high banks of SHOWTIME.
Stock class once again had a strong turnout, not quite as big as the showing at HotRod's last month, but with drivers of several different levels of skill all merged into one class, if the numbers keep growing this class may merit going back to the "Sportsman and Expert" classifications.
Sportsman Modified drew a good turnout as usual. Old veterans like Donn Natale and Kevin Kilber were out to battle some of the classes newer faces like Lou Maldonado and Carlton Duty. The racers in this class always look like they are having the most fun, they must know how to do it right.
19t Spec Mod is so intense, and now with the new ARCOR style Handwound 19t's being legal, speeds may change at a rapid pace. Erik Steenhoven and Gary Hamilton's crusade to dominate this weekends event were right on track. Hamilton shattered the class record and set the bar really high.
The Expert Modified boys had nothing but speed on their minds this weekend too, with 2 of Team Associated's top dogs on hand, Daryl Silva and Sean Cochran challenging track favorite Hamilton and Erik Steenhoven. It looked to be a battle of chassis designs this weekend. With the Associated drivers using the new L-4 design, Hamilton and Steenhoven running the KSG cs car designed by Tennessee's Andy McClellend, Kevin Osmon trying to get a handle on the SWIFT Maverick chassis and Brian Boudakian having his hands full of the new KGB car. Steenhoven would end up qualifying in the top spot with a new track record but a mechanical problem cost him the main. Silva just waiting for an opportunity was right there to take the point, and the win.
Next Stop on the "TOUR" will be the NEW Boulder City R/C Speedway on April 26th.
