Series Race 3 - South-West Tour "Championship Series"

[Henderson NV] - With lots of anticipation the TOUR headed to the Silver State of Nevada for race 3 of the 2003 season. The NEW Boulder City R/C Speedway is nearly a 1/10th scale mile in length and the crew did such an incredible job with all the details in building this awesome facility.

Qualifying saw most of the regular "fast guys" running up toward the front, but doing triple duty, a new face to the tour Austin Gossard showed he was a contender.qualifying 2nd in Sportsman Mod, 2nd in Stock and 9th in the 19t class. Top Qualifiers went out to Bill Mac in Stock and Sport. Mod with Gary Hamilton taking the 19t class and Erik Steenhoven in Exp. Mod. Visiting from out-of-state Bruce Triplett (R/C4LESS) took the 1/12th scale TQ.

All in all it was a great weekend of racing, several drivers showed up on Friday to take advantage of a day of practice then got the opportunity to do a little gambling at the RAILROAD PASS HOTEL/CASINO or head down to Vegas.

The biggest glitch came when there was some transponder confusion in the Sportsman Modified Main event causing cars to score with 3 second laps. The race was halted with Austin Gossard leading at the 2 minute mark, the problem was discovered and corrected and they Sportsman Guys got to rerun thier event after the rest of the mains were run.

In the re-running of the race again it was Gossard out front for the first 2 minutes but a trip through the grass off turn 4 cost him the lead and gave Boulder's Oval director Troy Schossow the point. Troy had a full lap lead over now 2nd place Donn Natale. Natale had a faster car and was able to get his lap back from Schossow with about a minute to go. Natale was closing on the back door of Troy gaining a few feet a lap, then it appears with less the 10 seconds to go that TROY is Dumping...and Natale is coming fast. Coming off turn 4 Troy's car is barely crawling and Natale if flying down the back straight. As the cars come to the line TROY SCHOSSOW pulls off the win by barely one foot over Donn Natale.
