2003 Race 4 - IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY
Saturday, May 17, 2003[Irwindale CA]by Joe Myers - Irwindale Speedway is one of the most beautiful speedways I've ever visited. Sitting just off the 605 freeway in Southern California it hosts some great auto racing events. This weekend, along with their normal racing action, they would also play host to R/C Car racings premier oval series.
Tom Kendall, tech director and for this weekend track set-up man, showed up Friday afternoon to start getting things set up for Saturdays event. A few racers also showed up to lend a helping hand. Paul Cathey, Steve Jacquez and Jason Wood all pulled together and helped wash, and clean the surface.
Racers started showing up Saturday morning around 6 a.m. and early practicers found the track was just a bit too slippery still. Once again the hoses were pulled out and the surface was washed again. This time the use of a high pressure nozzle really knocked most of the dust and sand off the asphalt. Once the track dried and light coat of ROOT BEER was applied to give the track just a little traction assistance.
The track, which measured out to approx 210 ft. had wide lanes and made for very good racing. Each round of qualifying the cars got faster and faster as set ups keep getting better. Most classes ended up with thier fastest times turned in the stacked mains.
Special thanks for this weekends events go to John Bojorquez and HOLLYWOOD RENTALS for the use of a Silent Generator. This made power great and allowed for the only engine noise to be the cars practicing on the Big Track.
