Race 8 - HOT ROD HOBBIES - Saugus, CA
Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003
[Saugus, CA] by Joe Myers - With a typical sunny Southern California sunrise looming in the air, the racers started setting up for another round of series oval racing at this months host HOTROD HOBBIES .
With a field of 50+ racers, including both track and series regulars and the added bonus of some out-of-town competiton as well, the days racing got underway at 10:00 sharp. With the track holding "Off-Road" racing in the afternoon, the program had to be kept on a fast-track in order to get the full 3 rounds of qualifying and mains completed in time. Jimmy Babcock ran the event to the minute and all racers did a great job getting out to corner marshal after their races and kept the pace moving along.
The fast guys (Expert Modified) would be made up of mostly Team Kisbey drivers today, with Jim Silvay taking TQ honors setting on the pole for the main. Once the main got underway though it was Erik Steenhoven who became the man to beat. Steenhoven who has already wrapped up the series championship in modified went on to run a 48/4:00.51, Silvay would end up second with a 47/4:03.00. Gary Hamilton finished 3rd just .30 seconds behind Silvay.
Sportsman Modified saw point leader Donn Natale set quick time to take pole honors running a 44/4:02.72 and grabbing those 2 bonus points. In the main it was Carlton Duty who made the charge to the front and took yet another win. Duty is closing the point gap on Natale, but will he have enough to catch him?
Expert Stock had Bill McAneney taking the tq spot out running Brett Patti by nearly a lap. But, when main time came Patti brought his game face and was able to beat Mac in a close battle till the finish. Finishing on the lead lap and coming home 3rd was Bryan Blaser.
Sportsman Stock saw a good battle for tq between Art Hernandez , Robert Jelsvik and Mike Twyning. These three would qualify less than 1 second apart, but it was Jelsvik who got the bonus points. The battle in the main would end up just as qualifying did. The same 3 drivers would finish in the order they qualified, with Jelsvik taking the win.
Art Hernandez would finish 2nd with Twyning 3rd. Rounding out the top 5, Charles Roark made one of his best runs bringing in the 4th spot with Joe Hawkins finishing 5th.
In the ROOKIE class, Suzie Anderson took the TQ spot but was no match for Chuck Acquistapace in the main. Char Acquistapace finished 2nd, with Bryan Myers in 3rd and Suzie back in the 4th spot.
19t Spec. Mod had a great field of competition this weekend with the top 8 qualifiers seperated by just over one lap and only 3 seconds seperating the top 4, Nic Case would be the one taking TQ points today just edging out Erik Steenhoven with a 45/4:01.65 to a 45/4:02.53. Steenhoven would be the one running up front in the main though and Larry Ruby made a great showing finishing in the 2nd spot. Gary Hamilton and Ken Collins took the third and fourth spots while Case ended up in the 5th spot..
The KISBEY Zero*19t class (free exibition class)** had Brett Patti setting the qualifying pace and putting up a great battle in the main, but it was Matt Murphy who took the win today. Patti finished 2nd with Eric Larsen 3rd.
Don't miss next months exciting return to the High Banks of the Encino Velodrome, Saturday Oct. 18th. and the season Finale at Bakersfield's SHOWTIME SPEEDWAY on November 1st.
