Feel the NEED The NEED for SPEED! RACE #2 - Encino CA The Encino Velodrome is the middle of California's San Fernando Valley can also be called "The House of Pain" for many racers.  With 4 cell ROCKETS reaching speeds in excess of 60 MPH crashes can be BRUTAL.  For those who survive the high banked concrete bicycle tracks treachery, the are certain rewards in the bragging rights of a great day of racing and for some, the thrill of SHATTERING a track record. The hunt for bragging rights goes to Scot Petitclerc this month.  Petitclerc took TQ in the first ever NoVAK Brushless 4300 class event at the 'drome running a  29/5:07.98.  Scot kept his momentum alive in the Modified class too with a 31/5:14.99 in qualifying to take another TQ spot. "Uncle Buck" would be the Top Dog in the STOCK class,  as has been the case many times before.  Buck's TQ run would be a  25/5:02.53 beating out Oval ACE Larry Ruby who ran a 25/5:09.36. In the Brushless NASTRUCK class, Bryan Myers would take TQ with a truck that was clearly not the fastest.  Myers did a great job of getting the most from his ride and running consistant laps to get a good run putting in a 24/5:01.77 to T.J. Kendall's 24/5:03.74 This years first trip to the Velodrome produced the MOST exciting main events I've seen on this track in a long time, if ever.  The Modified race was filled with excitement from the moment the tone sounded all the way until the final corner of the final lap. Petitclerc who had set the TQ pace had one of THE fastest holeshots I've ever seen on this high banked track pulling an 11.80 second lap and quickly grabbing a huge lead over 2nd qualifier Keith Brown (Brown's start was 13.13 seconds) with Jerry Purser coming out third.  Although Scot would lead the entire race, Brown didn't allow him to get comfortable keeping the pressure on the whole race.  When the race was over it was Scot Petitclerc turning the FIRST EVER 32 lap run going 32/5:08.51 with 2nd place Brown just missing his chance to follow Scot into the history books with his own 32 lap run.  Keith ran a 31/5:00.07 (figuring the speeds they were running, he missed by 7 ft.)  Nic Case (RC's WORLDS FASTEST DRIVER) finished 3rd also pulling a 31 lap run. In the STOCK class it was TQ Uncle Buck (Buck VanPatten) sitting on the pole pulling the hole shot over former champion Larry Ruby.  Both Buck and Ruby were running incredible lap times up front, turning 11.7 second laps. Buck would lead the race from the wire to the final corner of the last lap, where apparently he tried an aggressive move on a backmarker and would up spinning into the infield allowing the hard charging RUBY to get by for the win.  VanPatten would still finish in the 2nd spot with last years champion Tony Staples coming home 3rd. In the NoVAK 4300 Brushless class, again it was Scot Petitclerc showing the way in the main event.  Scot was able to hold off a strong field of 12 cars to win yet another race. Bakersfield's Lou Maldonado would edge 2nd qualifier Brett Patti for the second spot with Patti finishing 3rd with his 19t motor.  The top 3 finishers in the main all went 28 laps with 'Tour' newcomer Alan Webster taking the 4th spot just edging Donn Natale by .06 seconds. The Brushless NASTRUCK class Bryan Myers would set the pace in a car older than himself.  The 14 year old son of race director Joe Myers was driving the old HPI RoadStar to another TQ spot beating out the much faster, but more out-of-control trucks of Donn Natale, Kevin Kilber and T.J.Kendall.  Myers would grab the holeshot in the main and would lead most of the event when late in the race Donn Natale would grab that lead running over 1.5 seconds a lap quicker than Myers.  Natale drove by the Orange and White truck of Bryan's like it was parked at a truck stop, but Natale thermalled his ride just a couple laps later.  The chase was now between Myers and another series newcomer simply using the name ROMERO, Romero took over the top spot and went on to win his FIRST Truck race with Myers taking second is his fastest ever truck run.  Both drivers would turn 25 laps.  Third spot would go to John Miles who made his first attempt at the truck class, then TJ Kendall and Tom Kendall would finish 4th & 5th. Some call  VELODROME RACING, racing at the "House of Pain".  When running 2 1/2 lb. cars at 60+ MPH and hitting a Plywood Wall or a support pipe, damage occurs..and quickly. The above photograph is Dennis Brown's 4300 car.  The photo below is kind of hard to see all the damage, but Tim Kane saw it just fine.  Tim's car was totally destroyed when he caught the wall, breaking the chassis just behind the steering servo plus the obvious bumper damage. These guys will get their damaged rides back together and be sure to be back for the NEXT ONE.
