The South-West Tour R/C Oval series started in 2000 with a group of dedicated
R/C oval racers looking for some security of thier kind of racing being kept
alive. NORRCA had just been sold for the 3rd or 4th time in as many years and
the new owners didn't show much interest in promoting the long running Southern
California based oval series.
In stepped Joe Myers, a long time racer who had been working for the
organization for a couple years at that point, with the idea of taking on just
the R/C Oval Racing in this region to help keep it alive.
Move forward roughly 6 1/2 years and the little series is still going pretty
strong. Myers hold events from Central to Southern California and on occasion
the group travels to Boulder City Nevada and Phoenix Arizona as well, and every
season the series awards championships to drivers in each of the participating
classes.
This year a special event was put together for these racers. The first **Allstar
Shootout** event was aimed at all the past series champions from the first 6
seasons, along with event winners during the current season. This event would
not be about earning points toward the seasons ending championship, but instead
it was about bragging rights and winning the BIG PRIZES.
With nearly 20 sponsors coming on board to support this race, Myers was able to
raise over $3500.00 in Cash and Prizes to be awarded through the field for this
event.
The race format for the weekend saw the first of the 2 day event being a regular
club series event, with the winners of that days event also being eligible to
earn a spot into Sundays extravaganza. The actual SHOOTOUT was to be a 20 car
event, not seen since the old RCThunderdrome days back in the early 90's.
14 drivers were locked into the 20 car field by virtue of their past
championships and/or wins. This left 6 positions available for the rest of the
desiring racers to try to get into this prestigious field. These last 6 spots
would be filled from a 'last chance qualifying' event made up of (number of
drivers) who would fill in the rear of the field
.
The 14 pre-qualified racers would get the opportunity to qualify for their
starting position by running 4 lap single car qualifying with the pole winner
getting a $50.00 bonus.
TOP 10 QUALIFIERS (using 4 lap single car qualifying):
POSITION - TIME - NAME -- MPH 1 4 0:39.08 Eric Brust 58.07 2 4 0:39.34 Erik Steenhoven 57.68 3 4 0:39.76 Larry Ruby 57.07 4 4 0:39.95 Gary Hamilton 56.81 5 4 0:40.12 Bryan Myers 56.56 6 4 0:40.12 Scot Petitclerc 56.56 7 4 0:40.58 Keith Brown 55.92 8 4 0:41.02 Richard Tompkins 55.32 9 4 0:41.77 John Miles 54.33 0 4 0:43.07 Art Hernandez 52.69 The other 4 'prequalified' drivers were unable to make a qualifying attempt
The Shootout would be a 2 segment race, with the first segment being a short 20
lap sprint and the finishing order from that segment would line up and run 30
more laps for the overall **Allstar Championship**
When the horn sounded for the start of the first segment there was chaos on the
track. The guys up front got away with a great start, but several in the middle
of the field had issues getting their cars to drive straight on the slippery
velodrome surface and several cars were caught up in some pretty nasty wrecks.
Out front though it was 2nd qualifier Erik Steenhoven who grabbed the lead and
never really drew a challenge from the rest of the field. Steenhoven went on to
win the first segment taking a $100.00 in cash along with a prize package from
NOVAK, Precision Racing Products, Jake's Performance Hobbies and more valued at
over $500.00.
To help give the shootout racers time to work on their hotrods, two support
classes were run this weekend, NASTRUCK and 4 cell STOCK. The racers for these 2
classes were able to squeeze in a couple rounds of qualifying between the
Shootout rounds, and they had some good racing too.
John Miles would take the NASTRUCK
Top Qualifying spot, and in the Stock class
it was
Buck VanPatten who continued his stock qualifying
domination on the Velodrome.
When the 2nd segment of the SHOOTOUT took to the track, the field was missing 2
cars, including the popular and favored to win Gary Hamilton. Hamilton has a
long history on Velodromes and is usually one of the guys who are hard to beat,
unfortunately his car was severely damaged in a crash in the first segment.
At the tone - the cars sped off the line and charged into turn one. 18 cars all
got out quick and had an awesome start, someone said this reminded them of
walking into a dark room and turning on the lights and watching cockroaches
scramble....it was crazy.
A few laps in the collisions started however, and again a few cars were
collected and heavily damaged. Included in the mix this time was the car of
multi-time series champion Larry Ruby. Ruby's car suffered major damage to the
chassis, broken wheels and some of the electronic components damaged as well.
This didn't slow down the action on the track however. There were battles all
around the 250 meter circuit, with lap times running in the low 10 second range
from nearly every car in the field.
Up front it was the TQ Eric Brust from Bakersfield, followed closely by segment
one winner Erik Steenhoven. The third place car was a suprise to some, Keith
Brown having one of his personal best velodrome runs ever was running in the
front group and would be able to stay there. Another one of the weekends
favorites SCOT PETITCLERC, who up until this weekend had held the track record
for this class combination found himself with a solid top 5 position as well,
but Petitclerc showed up this weekend with a BRAND NEW Car Design and it was
never quite as good as his old standby car had been at the previous events.
One of the races great battles was happening back in the pack, where Brett
Patti, Art Hernandez and 15 year old Bryan Myers were battling for the 7th spot.
These three cars swapped positions, and battled for several laps until something
broke on Patti's car in turns 3/4 and his car shot across the track smashing
into the wall and sliding back down to the infield. Patti's day was done. Myers
would go on to edge out former champion Hernandez for the 7th spot and one of
his best ever races.
